Texas’s Woodlands — Ten years following her lone major victory at age 19 in the 2014 ANA Inspiration (now Chevron Championship), Lexi Thompson shot 78-74 and missed the two-over cutline by six strokes at the same major. Over the course of her last seven starts, Thompson has missed six cuts at majors. During that time, she has averaged 74.4, including 14 straight rounds in the 70s. Following Friday’s play, Thompson declined to speak.
Thompson’s performance at Carlton Woods continues a sharp decline from his major-league consistency during the preceding ten years. From 2013 to 2022, she finished in the top five at a major four times, including four times as runner-up.

But among the 29-year-old’s greatest achievements are several blown opportunities to win a second major championship. After a spectator emailed the LPGA at the 2017 ANA, Thompson was informed that she would be fined four strokes for failing to replace her ball correctly during the third round. She later lost in a playoff match against So Yeon Ryu.
In the final nine holes of the 2021 U.S. Women’s Open, Thompson gave up a five-shot lead and came in third. The following year, at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship at the Congressional Blue Course, she gave up a two-shot lead with three holes remaining and finished in second place.
Thompson has only made one significant cut since Congressional, which was at the Women’s PGA last year. Thompson finished her second round with four birdies to qualify for the weekend. She completed T-47.
Up until the end of the season, Thompson had difficulty most of the previous year. She improved her status for 2024 by going 3-1-0 at the Solheim in September and finishing in the top 10 in her final three starts of the season (a T-8 at the NW Arkansas Championship, a sixth at the Ascendant LPGA, and a T-7 at The Annika). The 11-time LPGA champion has been in good form so far this season, finishing in the top three at the Ford Championship three weeks ago.

Andy Lyons (76-71, three over) versus Jin Young Ko
The ANA Inspiration winner for 2019 never bounced back from the opening nine holes in the competition. Ko shot a five-over 41 on the inbound side on Thursday. The 15-time winner came just one shot short of playing the weekend in her first domestic start of the 2024 season when Ko played the remainder of the championship at two under.
Angela Stanford (three over, 74-73).
The 98th major appearance in Stanford history narrowly missed the weekend. With five holes remaining on Friday, Stanford was tied for the lead after an eagle on the par-5 13th, but the 46-year-old bogeyed the 15th and 16th to finish one stroke outside the cutline.
Stacy Lewis (three over, 74-73).
With nine holes remaining on Friday, Lewis shot a flawless two under first round to climb back to even par. The ANA Inspiration winner from 2015 finished her round outside the cut line after making four bogeys in her last nine holes. The product of Woodlands, Texas, has missed two starts at Carlton Woods due to injury.
Alison Lee (four over, 78-70)
Lee finished two rounds short of the weekend despite birdieing six of her last 14 holes. This is the No. 14 player in the world’s first missed cut of 2024.
Tavatanakit, Patty (77-71, four over)
Tavatanakit shot 40 in her second nine on Thursday, which sent her outside the cutline. The 2021 ANA Inspiration winner finished T-41 in the previous season and is failed to establish herself at Carlton Woods.
Rose Zhang (four over, 74-75)
Zhang’s Carlton Woods pro Chevron debut came to an early end. Up until the par-4 10th hole, where she carded her lone double bogey of the week, she was inside the cutline.
So Yeon Ryu (seven over, 77-74).

A month ago, Ryu declared that she will be retiring after this year’s Chevron. Even though she didn’t get it to the weekend, the former World No. 1 was optimistic as she left the LPGA stage.
“I’m incredibly fortunate,” Ryu remarked. “I really feel like I need to grind it right now and head to the airport to go to the next tournament, but I really am grateful for everything.”
After going off the 18th green Friday, she was met by a procession of her friends who were all eager to give her hugs. From 2010 to 2022, the 2017 ANA Inspiration major champion participated in every round of the competition.
