This season, Major League Manager Don Mattingly of the Los Angeles Dodgers may take the helm once again. As of right now, Mattingly is the bench coach for the Toronto Blue Jays. Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports that Mattingly may take over as team manager.

“The Toronto Blue Jays are one of baseball’s most underachieving teams once again, sitting in last place, with manager John Schneider on the hot seat,” Nightengale said on Sunday. “If the Blue Jays continue to struggle, and Schneider is the scapegoat, his replacement is expected to be Don Mattingly.”

In his third season as manager, John Schneider may be replaced by Mattingly.

Mattingly has been with Toronto for two seasons already. In addition to being a “offensive coordinator,” the 63-year-old is more of a bench coach. In addition, Mattingly manages the hitting coaches and the video coordinator for the squad.

From 2016 to 22, Mattingly served as a manager for the Miami Marlins. He had a 443-587 record in seven seasons and only made it to the postseason once during his lackluster tenure in South Beach.

Mattingly played five seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers before moving to Miami. Despite finishing with above-.500 records each time, his first two years behind the bench were difficult (mostly because of former owner Frank McCourt’s frugal ways). Over the following three years, Mattingly led the Dodgers to three consecutive division championships. Nevertheless, the Dodgers were unsuccessful, missing out on the World Series and the division stage twice.

They replaced Mattingly with their personally chosen manager, Dave Roberts, a year after general manager Farhan Zaidi and president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman took over. With a 446-363 record and a.551 win percentage, Mattingly concluded his tenure with Los Angeles.
