John Schneider Manager Of Toronto Blue Jays is Gone
Don Mattingly, the manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers, may take the helm of a major league bench this season. Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports that Mattingly, who is the Toronto Blue Jays’ bench coach at the moment, may take over as team manager.
“The Toronto Blue Jays are one of baseball’s most underachieving teams once again, sitting in last place, with manager John Schneider on the hot seat,” Nightengale wrote on Sunday. “If the Blue Jays continue to struggle, and Schneider is the scapegoat, his replacement is expected to be Don Mattingly.”
John Schneider, who is in his third season as manager, may be replaced by Mattingly.
Mattingly has spent two seasons with Toronto. The sixty-three-year-old is more of a “offensive coordinator” than a bench coach. In addition, Mattingly is in charge of the team’s video coordinator and hitting coaches.
From 2016 to 22, Mattingly served as the Miami Marlins’ manager. His seven seasons at 443-587 with only one postseason appearance made make his stint in South Beach lackluster.
Mattingly played with the Los Angeles Dodgers for five seasons before moving to Miami. Even though former owner Frank McCourt was frugal, his first two years behind the bench were difficult, even though he ended each season with above-.500 records. Mattingly led the Dodgers to three consecutive division victories during the following three years. Despite their best efforts, the Dodgers were unable to go past the division stage twice and to the World Series.
Dave Roberts, their personally chosen manager, seized Mattingly’s post one year after general manager Farhan Zaidi and president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman took over. Mattingly had a 446-363 record and a.551 win percentage when he left Los Angeles.
