Miami Marlins: Why it would make sense to deal Marcus Stroman to the New York Yankees…
Pitching is a major issue for the Miami Marlins. Surprisingly, they also urgently need to make financial investments in their on-field group.
Maybe a deal that benefits both parties is possible given the growing circumstances between Jordan Montgomery and the Arizona Diamondbacks. It might also be advantageous for both teams if the Marlins and New York Yankees made a similar trade focused on former ace Marcus Stroman.
This offseason, the Marlins must increase payroll by about $20 million in order to prevent a grievance from being brought against them. In order to free up payroll for other purposes, the Yankees are also actively looking to move Stroman’s $18.33 million deal.
In 2024, the 33-year-old veteran was still a very productive starter. In 154.2 innings pitched, he recorded 113 strikeouts and a 4.31 ERA. Stroman had a genuine possibility to positively regress toward an even better stat line in 2025 because this was the first season since 2018 that he failed to produce an ERA below 4.0.
For a tumultuous Miami rotation, Stroman’s 150–170 innings of labor would be quite valuable. On a Marlins team that is rebuilding, the two-time All-Star wouldn’t have to dominate. This transfer would be worthwhile because of his capacity to relieve burden on the younger arms.
Another possibility is that the Yankees are so eager to transfer Stroman’s contract that they would think about stapling a low-level prospect to the agreement in return for the pay cut. President Peter Bendix and Miami’s front office would benefit greatly if this were ever to happen.
In an effort to recover from the departure of superstar Juan Soto, New York would be able to take advantage of the remaining free agency class if Stroman signed a contract. Removing the seasoned pitcher and adding to their depth chart is worth New York’s effort.
In exchange, Miami might be able to add a prospect or late-round draft pick, increase salary, get an innings eater they sorely need, and give a seasoned presence to a very youthful squad.
