After winning the Italian Open, Novak Djokovic was signing autographs when a water bottle struck him in the head.
The object, which fell from the stands, struck world number one Novak Djokovic, causing him to fall to the ground, as shown in a social media video.
The hard bottle had apparently fallen out of someone’s luggage in the crowd, according to the tournament organizers.
The 24-time Grand Slam champion lingered on the ground for some minutes before security assisted him in leaving the Rome venue.
The tournament’s organizers stated in a statement that was obtained by PA, “This is not being treated as a deliberate act, but as an accident.”
“The bottle slipped out of the boy’s bag as he was calling out for an autograph.
“Novak has already departed to head back to his hotel after completing the required checks. There is no reason to be concerned about his health.
Another video appeared to show a fan reaching over to sign a bottle while the bottle was falling out of his backpack.
After defeating Corentin Moutet of France 6-3, 6-1, Djokovic approached fans in the stands, which is when the incident occurred.
The water bottle hit him over the top of his head as he was signing a fan’s sheet of paper.
In the upcoming round, Djokovic is scheduled to face Alejandro Tabilo of Chile on Sunday.
Boutler loses against qualifier from Slovakia
Katie Boulter lost to Slovakian qualifier Rebecca Sramkova 6-4 7-6 (10-8) in the second round of the Rome women’s singles tournament.
Early in the opening set, Boulter, who was ranked 26th in the event, was broken twice by the 120th-ranked player due to her lack of rhythm.
Although the world number one from Britain was able to steal a break back, Sramkova was able to end the first set.
Despite trailing by two breaks early in the second set, Boulter battled back and wasted a chance to tie the match at 5-4.
In the tie-break, the 27-year-old saved three match points, and Sramkova won in two hours and seven minutes.
To advance to the second round in the men’s doubles, Jamie Murray and Michael Venus defeated Lloyd Glasspool and Jean-Julien Rojer 6-4, 6-3.
In the women’s doubles, Heather Watson and Xu Yifan lost to Zheng Saisai and Wang Xinyu 6-3 1-6 10-8, sending them out in the first round.
