A seven hundred million dollar, ten-year contract has been agreed to by the Los Angeles Dodgers and Japanese superstar Shohei Ohtani. We hear that this is the largest sports contract ever for an individual athlete. Football, baseball, and golf records are all significantly surpassed by this contract. As long as live sports remain a popular business for investment and television viewing, it reflects the more extravagant expenditure by wealthy owners, such as the Dodgers consortium led by Bruce Guggenheim. Due to Major League Baseball’s lack of a strict salary ceiling for individual players, it stands alone among US sports. Ohtani’s deal exceeds prior records in this regard. Notable past contracts are the $90-million, nine-year deal inked by Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees this season and the $427-million, twelve-year contract extension that Los Angeles Angels star Mike Trout obtained in 2019. The contract breaks previous records in international football, like the $200 million a year that Cristiano Ronaldo allegedly agreed to pay to play for Al Nassr FC in Saudi Arabia for a two-year period. Saudi Arabia’s LIV Golf Tour will have John Rahm, this week’s winner of the Masters, as a player. Around $300 million is reportedly the tour’s value.
