Breaking News: Just now, The Dallas Mavericks formally declare Spencer Dinwiddie, a former Lakers guard, back…
Serving as the Mavs’ third guard behind Luka Doncic and Jalen Brunson, Dinwiddie was crucial to their run to the Western Conference Finals in 2022 and provided a great boost to their bench in terms of scoring. Although Dinwiddie scored 30 points in just 25 minutes during Game 7 of the Western Semifinals against the Phoenix Suns, many still recall Doncic’s explosive performance.
Dinwiddie’s journey has been difficult ever since he was traded. He averaged more over 17 points per game in 76 games during his finest years in Dallas, but this season between the Nets and Lakers, he only averaged 10.5 points. Dinwiddie was traded for Dennis Schroder to the Toronto Raptors at the trade deadline, but Los Angeles claimed him after he was waived.
Dinwiddie was first signed by Dallas in 2021 following Kristaps Porzingis’ departure to the Washington Wizards. Although he wasn’t considered a viable asset at the time, Dinwiddie soon showed that he could be just what the Mavs needed.
As their primary third guard, Dinwiddie should slot in similarly to how he did during his previous tenure in Dallas. Even though he could have to compete against Justin Grimes and Jakeen Hardy for the opportunity, his experience should give him an advantage over the other players.
A.J. Lawson’s non-guaranteed contract could be waived by the Mavericks this offseason in order to clear room for Markieff Morris, a move that has been suggested for weeks. Although neither player anticipates having much of an impact on the floor, Morris offers the seasoned leadership that teams desire.
