Following his breakup with Goran Ivanisevic, Novak Djokovic has acknowledged that he can decide not to hire a coach.
The six-year relationship between the world No. 1 and Ivanisevic, which will go down as one of the best in tennis history, came to an abrupt end last month when the former announced it.
Djokovic advanced to the Monte Carlo Masters semifinal after the pair announced their breakup, but he will not be participating in the Madrid Open since he is more focused on the Italian Open and Roland Garros.
He was collaborating in Monte Carlo with veteran confident and fellow countryman Nenad Zimonjic, but he has stated in words first published by The Guardian that he may decide to bring in a permanent figure.
“I am thinking about that as well, whether I should have the coach or not,” Djokovic remarked.
We’re debating whether to keep going after the final three weeks, since I had a great time working with Nenad Zimonjić as my coach. I’ll decide within the following term; let’s see.
In the later years of his career, Djokovic has been vocal about his intention to adopt a more focused approach to tennis, with the ultimate goal being more Grand Slam and major event victories.
And he acknowledged that this strategy had played a part in his choice to wait and see what happens rather than replace Ivanisevic right away.
“I’m not hurrying. The world No. 1 player continued, “I feel like I’ve been playing tennis for 20 years and have a lot of different teams and coaches; it’s not like I think I don’t need a coach at all.
“I believe that having a top-notch team, including a fitness coach, physiotherapist, and mental coach, is always beneficial. Everything matters. It makes a formula for success and improves your training, recuperation, and performance. For as long as you can, remain at the top.
However, I believe I’m at a point in my career where I can afford to consider the possibility of going without a coach. See you later. I’m going to decide shortly.”
While giving a speech at the Laureus World Sports Awards in Madrid, Djokovic won the Sportsman of the Year title an incredible five times.
Spanish tennis players Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz were also present at the ceremony, while Garbine Muguruza, who recently retired, also made an appearance.
