Going into the 2024 season, the Detroit Lions are in an unheard-of position as a serious Super Bowl candidate. They also boast a strong roster that is practically unmatched in the league, having come a long way during the Brad Holmes/Dan Campbell administration.

In the end, it indicates that the Lions have an abundance of skill and 53 roster spaces to occupy following final cuts prior to the start of the season. It’s possible that some of the younger players may return to the practice squad, but some talented players will be cut.

Aside from the obvious cuts that other clubs might make to their own rosters, the Lions could have a few veteran players who are traded before the first game of the season. On that front, some offers might even surface, giving the Lions a chance to recover an asset for a player who might not end up on the team.

Before Week 1, the following three Lions players could be dealt.It makes some sense because Cominisky has been floated as a possible preseason trade candidate a few times already. The defensive line is quite competitive for the Lions, and Cominsky chose to take a salary cut this offseason rather than risk (presumably) losing his job. It’s likely that he was faced with an either-or choice and chose to accept the pay decrease over being fired.

Cominsky’s ability to play both inside and outside is a plus, and as training camp and the preseason progress, other clubs may find him appealing as they seek a defensive lineman. Although his output decreased from 2022 to 2023, he showed that he was capable and resilient in 2022, as seen by his ability to play with a club on his hand following thumb surgery.

With training camp approaching, it seemed improbable that the Lions will actively pursue Cominsky at this time. However, he needs to have a successful training camp. If he doesn’t make the squad, things could change and he’ll become a valuable depth player who can be traded.
