DONE DEAL: Just In South Carolina Football Head coach Shane Beamer confirms Another four-star quarterback commit to the South Carolina Gamecocks.
Brady Smigiel, a quarterback prospect for South Carolina, of Newbury Park, California, declared his decommitment from Florida State on January 26. Last summer, Smigiel (6-4, 220) made a commitment to the Seminoles.
Earlier this month, while in California, South Carolina coach Shane Beamer paid Smigiel a visit. Smigiel had worked at UCLA and knew Darren Uscher, the Director of Player Personnel at USC. His father, Joe Smigiel, was an offensive tackle for Arizona under the renowned coach Dick Tomey and is currently the head coach at Newbury Park. Uscher was contacted by Florida State coach Mike Norvell, who opted to look into other options after firing offensive coordinator Alex Atkins and replacing him with Gus Malzahn.
“The hiring of Mike Shula piqued our interest in USC,” Coach Smigiel stated. Their attack has some strong pro elements, and he is a pro-type player. It began there, in a sense. After viewing the film, the three of them approved it.
Beamer followed up with his in-person visit to the school after extending the offer to Smigiel.
Coach Smigiel remarked, “Obviously showed great interest in what he has with Brady and it’s just evolving as it goes.” This spring, we’re going to go out there and observe their performance, allowing Brady to observe from the quarterback’s room. We’ll most likely go on a few more excursions. That’s where we are at the moment.
The Smigiels intend to visit Washington, UCLA, Michigan, and Michigan State in the spring in addition to USC. On January 25, Ohio State OC Chip Kelly paid Smigiel a visit in California.
“He has no problem traveling as far as he needs to go to play. “The location is not as important as the fit,” Coach Smigiel stated. In addition, he dislikes continuing to travel the nation on numerous occasions. When he plans a trip, he takes it seriously. He hasn’t signed them up yet, but those are the ones who have the ability to go where he’s going.
Coach Smigiel hopes that his kid will gain the knowledge he needs to make the best choice possible from these trips.
Coach Smigiel stated, “I think it’s good for everybody involved to make sure the fit is correct.” Finding the best fit for him in terms of the coach’s philosophy and the offensive strategy they are using is what he is doing. As a head coach, we focus a lot on culture, accountability, and buy-in. It’s challenging to maintain that positive culture in the realm of college football now. We asked Coach Beamer those difficult questions, and his response made me think of a man who used to coach me. I coach in the same manner that Dick Tomey at the University of Arizona coached me. He is undoubtedly a very successful instructor, and our meeting went quite well.
Smigiel’s career has taken off in the quarterbacking world. This season, he passed for 3,521 yards and 49 touchdowns, earning him the title of Mr. Football in California. His career totals now stand at 11,222 yards and 147 touchdowns. Beamer and Shula have identified two quarterbacks for the 2026 class, including Smigiel. Additionally, they extended an offer to Nashville’s Jared Curtis, who has scheduled a formal visit with the Gamecocks for June.
• Rodney Colton (6-2, 220), a 2026 linebacker from Newnan, Georgia, was removed from South Carolina’s 2026 commitment list last week. According to Hale McGranahan of The Big Spur, the Gamecock staff determined that Colton was not sincere about keeping his word. Colton refuted that idea in an interview with Jordan Kaye of The State, stating that he had been committed since the 10th grade (April 24, 2024) and had accepted roughly 20 offers while remaining true to his promise.
Colton, however, said that linebackers coach Clayton White called him on Tuesday night and voiced his belief that he was behaving more like a free agent than a commitment.Since his commitment, Colton has continued to tour other programs, and this past weekend, he made plans to return to Tennessee, according to Rivals’ Sam Spiegelman. Last week, Colton received an offer from Missouri as well. Last week, he also had meetings with Coleman Hutzler, the linebackers coach at Mississippi State, and Pete Golding, the defensive coordinator at Ole Miss. The Gamecocks have five commitments after Colton is removed from the class.
