According to Danielle Allentuck and Darreonna Davis of The Baltimore Banner, the Phoenix Police Department has determined that former Baltimore Orioles pitcher Brian Matusz most likely passed away from a heroin overdose. On January 6, Matusz passed away at the age of 37; however, at the time, the cause of his death was unknown.In a tragic circumstance, fans lamented Matusz’s passing.

 

On January 4, Matusz was reportedly taken to the emergency department by his mother. His mother was worried; therefore, it was suggested that the former pitcher contact a mental health specialist. On January 6, after Matusz had died, his mother discovered him at his house.

 

According to the Baltimore Banner, police noted there were no obvious injuries or indications of foul play.

In the 2008 MLB Draft, Matusz was chosen by the Orioles with the fourth overall choice. Matusz was a left-handed pitcher with promise. In 2009, he made his major league debut as a starting pitcher for the Orioles. Before starting to switch to a bullpen role in 2012, Matusz would continue to start games.

Matusz advanced in his big league career by becoming a full-time reliever in 2013 and having a solid 3.53 ERA. From 2013 to 2015, he developed into one of the sport’s finest relievers.

 

In 2016, Brian Matusz pitched for the Chicago Cubs and Orioles in his final Major League Baseball season. He did, however, play in just one game for Chicago. In the end, Matusz appeared in 280 Major League Baseball games, 279 of which were with the Orioles.

In 2017, Matusz signed a minor league contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Later, after being cut by the Diamondbacks, he would sign with the Mexican League.

For his tenure with the Baltimore Orioles, Brian Matusz will live on in memory. His family is in our prayers and thoughts during this trying time.
