GOOD NEWS: Eric DeCosta: The Baltimore Ravens Strike Deal With Well-Regarded General Manager Over…
The Baltimore Ravens’ well-liked general manager, Eric DeCosta, doesn’t require much assistance in managing the front office, although he does “think highly” of Joe Douglas.Douglas was fired on Tuesday, November 19, after serving as EDC’s opposite number with the New York Jets. However, given how highly regarded he is by multiple NFL teams, Douglas may not be in exile for long.According to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network, “Joe Douglas is highly regarded by the Ravens, Eagles, and other teams.” He is no longer the general manager of the Jets, but he will quickly find another NFL position.
If Douglas “was interested in returning to Baltimore in some capacity, there would be a scouting/front office role available for him,” according to a piece by Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic that Garafolo highlighted. In Baltimore, where he began, he is well-liked and respected. It Makes Sense for Ravens to Add a Familiar Face to the Front OfficePrior to joining the Chicago Bears in 2015, Douglas worked in personnel and scouting with the Ravens from 2000. DeCosta, who oversaw college scouting and player personnel from 2003 to 2011, shared time with him in Baltimore. As VP of Player Personnel, Douglas went on to help the 2017 Philadelphia Eagles win a Super Bowl, but his big break and his career with the Jets ended. The 48-year-old’s main issue was continually failing to find and acquire a franchise quarterback. Douglas struggled to get the big one right, but it doesn’t imply his success rate in identifying talent was lacking. Notably, Douglas acquired a number of excellent starters from the 2022 NFL draft class, including wide receiver Garrett Wilson, the league’s Rookie of the Year two years prior, and shutdown cornerback Sauce Gardner. In addition to those two names, Douglas selected edge-rushers Will McDonald IV and Jermaine Johnson, running backs Braelon Allen and Breece Hall, and cornerback Michael Carter II.
According to ESPN’s Dan Orlovsky, the Jets received at least “seven really good NFL starters” from Douglas, according to the records. He thinks that the Jets’ overall dysfunction is demonstrated by the general manager’s decision to choose so many young, very impactful players and then fire them.
