During his meetings with teams interested in signing him in MLB free agency, superstar Juan Soto has finally met with the New York Yankees.According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, Soto and the Yankees had a “very good” meeting.

“The Yankees Soto meeting went’very well’ (late word),” Heyman wrote in a message on X on November 19, 2024. The fact is that the champion Dodgers and the deep-pocketed, all-in Mets have a good chance of winning, and at least the Jays and Red Sox are also in the running.

Soto has also had meetings with the New York Mets and Boston Red Sox, among other possible suitors. According to Heyman, Soto and the Yankees were scheduled to meet in Southern California on November 18.

“A group of high-ranking club officials, including manager Aaron Boone and general manager Brian Cashman, were scheduled to meet with superstar free agent hitter Juan Soto late Monday afternoon in southern California,” Heyman explained in a message titled “Yankees brass meets with Juan Soto as Dodgers expected to enter the fray” on November 18, 2024.

Soto’s contract might be historic, but whoever signs him must be ready to accept it. Jeff Passan of ESPN stated that Soto might sign a contract worth more than $600 million in guaranteed cash. According to Heyman, Soto may ultimately agree to a contract for more than $700 million.

As stated in an article titled “Jeff Passan’s 2024-25 MLB offseason preview, intel, updates” on November 12, “If the money level was unclear at the start of the winter, it is now: Given his age, Soto will likely be entitled to the longest contract in baseball history—Fernando Tatis Jr.’s 14-year, $340 million deal holds the record—and an expected guarantee in excess of $600 million.”

In the Juan Soto sweepstakes, the Yankees are one of the favourites.

It isn’t comforting Yankees supporters that Soto might sign with a rival team like the Red Sox or Mets during free agency. According to Heyman, Soto will also visit with the Los Angeles Dodgers, which will exacerbate the situation. The Yankees do have a few advantages when it comes to their chances of re-signing Soto.

“But the Yankees aren’t that far behind [the Dodgers], and at least the perception has been that they hold some sort of edge since Soto seemed to generally enjoy his season in the Bronx, which resulted in a World Series loss to those Dodgers,” Heyman continued.

Soto stated in an interview after the Yankees’ Game 5 World Series loss that winning would be a key consideration in his next decision. He has made it to the World Series twice, winning with the Nats in 2019. As is the case with most free agents, however, a number of executives with interested teams are anticipating that the main consideration will be the actual deal. In the event that it is true, the Yankees also don’t necessarily have an easy path to success.
