Alex Ovechkin limps off ice, leaves game with leg injury

Alex Ovechkin’s night ended early on Monday, despite him being on his hottest run of the season.

The captain and the Washington Capitals will now have to wait to see if he will miss more than the conclusion of a decisive victory.

With 14:30 remaining in the game, Ovechkin, who had already scored two goals in a 6-2 victory over the Utah Hockey Club in Salt Lake City, collided with Utah forward Jack McBain while attempting to move the puck out of the defensive zone.

Ovechkin fell to the ice and paused to grab his skates after the players seemingly made accidental contact, catching each other in the legs. Teammate Jakob Chychrun assisted the 39-year-old veteran off the ice, and he sat on the bench for a short while before returning to the locker room.

He never came back.

Capitals coach Spencer Carbery informed the media following the game that Ovechkin was still being assessed.

With the two goals, the Russian’s career goal total now stands at 868, 26 goals short of the NHL record set by Wayne Gretzky. Ovechkin now leads the NHL with 15 goals this season, thanks to the goals. Ovechkin needs to play 18 games to reach 15, which is the fewest games he has ever taken in a season in his illustrious career.

He has 13 goals in his last 11 games and scored a hat trick in Sunday’s 5-2 victory over Vegas.

On Tuesday, Ovechkin also tied an NHL record by scoring past Utah’s Connor Ingram, the 178th different goalie. Now, he and Jaromir Jagr also have that mark. In addition, Ovechkin became the first player to score more than 100 goals in an away game.

The visiting Colorado Avalanche will be the next opponent for the Capitals, who have won four in a row.
