A severe thunderstorm warning for Airdrie has ended. The warning prompted an Alberta Emergency Alert earlier this evening.

Earlier on Monday evening, an Alberta Emergency alert was issued due to a weather warning for Airdrie and the surrounding areas.

According to the alert, Environment Canada issued a severe thunderstorm warning for South Central Alberta at 7:41 p.m.

“Extra care and attention should be exercised in and around the following localities: Airdrie, Crossfield, Calgary, Bottrel and Cochrane.”

Environment Canada’s warning stated, “Intense lightning is likely, and tornados are possible with any thunderstorm that develops. Powerful winds are possible just ahead and south of the thunderstorm.”

Giant hail can smash windows, destroy property and vehicles and cause life-threatening injury. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles.

Severe thunderstorm warnings are issued when imminent or occurring thunderstorms are likely to produce or are producing one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, and torrential rainfall.

Airdrie remains under a thunderstorm watch.
