NFL QB Index, Week 9: Matthew Stafford vaults into top 10; Dak Prescott, Aaron Rodgers plummet
Josh Allen
Buffalo Bills · Year 7
2024 stats: 8 games | 64.1% completion | 1,766 passing yards | 7.9 yards per attempt | 14 passing TDs | 1 INT | 204 rushing yards | 3 rushing TDs | 5 fumbles
When the Bills’ offense is clicking, it’s something to behold, especially since it allows Allen to play his signature style. In Week 8, this included precise passes to tight ends, a strong presence from Khalil Shakir in the middle of the field, and the growing connection between Allen and rookie Keon Coleman, who pulled in five catches for 70 yards and a touchdown. The running game provided balance, easing the pressure on Allen and allowing for a commanding performance where he took advantage of Seattle’s defensive looks and added his own flair—like his scramble and pinpoint throw to Dalton Kincaid for a touchdown. If the Bills keep this momentum, Allen could soon join the MVP race.
Patrick Mahomes
Kansas City Chiefs · Year 8
2024 stats: 7 games | 68.4% completion | 1,651 passing yards | 7.3 yards per attempt | 8 passing TDs | 9 INTs | 139 rushing yards | 1 rushing TD | 0 fumbles
In Week 8, the Chiefs’ offense didn’t shine, but Mahomes’ skill in avoiding containment helped secure the win. He created plays through improvisation, moving in and out of the pocket and making on-the-run throws to keep drives alive. According to Next Gen Stats, he went 8-for-12 for 89 yards, with one touchdown and a 116.3 passer rating on such attempts. Although he threw an interception, it was due to the ball being deflected mid-throw. Mahomes was, once again, brilliant at exploiting small openings to extend plays. His unconventional style this season may not reflect in box scores, but those watching closely can see he’s performing very well.
C.J. Stroud
Houston Texans · Year 2
2024 stats: 8 games | 66.5% completion | 1,948 passing yards | 7.3 yards per attempt | 11 passing TDs | 4 INTs | 84 rushing yards | 0 rushing TDs | 3 fumbles
Though the Texans still aren’t providing Stroud with consistent protection, they showed some improvement in Week 8. Stroud has adapted well to handling the pressure, showing more skill at escaping the rush while keeping his eyes downfield and making faster, accurate throws. While this limits the offense’s overall potential, he’s making the best of the situation. Houston may lean toward more rollouts moving forward, a tactic Stroud has proven effective with. He managed the game well, helping put 23 points on the board against the Colts, and most importantly, led the Texans to victory.
Jayden Daniels
Washington Commanders · Rookie
2024 stats: 8 games | 71.8% completion | 1,736 passing yards | 8.4 yards per attempt | 7 passing TDs | 2 INTs | 424 rushing yards | 4 rushing TDs | 3 fumbles
Despite playing with a rib injury in Week 8, Daniels threw for over 300 yards and delivered an unforgettable Hail Mary. Statistically, it was another standout performance, with Daniels nearing 400 total yards, though Chicago’s defense posed a real challenge, especially on third downs (Washington converted just 5 of 15). It wasn’t the dominant showing Daniels has often led this season for the Commanders, but once again, he demonstrated he’s far from an ordinary rookie.
Matthew Stafford
Los Angeles Rams · Year 16
2024 stats: 7 games | 67.7% completion | 1,671 passing yards | 7.2 yards per attempt | 7 passing TDs | 5 INTs | -7 rushing yards | 0 rushing TDs | 2 fumbles
For the first time since Week 1, Stafford played with his full lineup of wide receivers, and Rams fans got to see just how exceptional he can be. Last Thursday, he rekindled his chemistry with Puka Nacua and Cooper Kupp, firing sharp throws from the pocket, completing off-balance passes, and even evading two sack attempts to send a perfect pass to Kupp for a touchdown. Stafford’s powerful arm was on full display, with a highlight reel packed with impressive throws—a refreshing departure from the challenges he faced over the past month.
Jordan Love
Green Bay Packers · Year 5
2024 stats: 6 games | 61.7% completion | 1,547 passing yards | 7.7 yards per attempt | 15 passing TDs | 9 INTs | 28 rushing yards | 0 rushing TDs | 1 fumble
Evaluating Love’s performance in Week 8 is challenging due to a groin injury he sustained on the Packers’ first possession. He attempted to play through the discomfort, completing 14 of 22 passes for 196 yards, but it was evident that the injury hindered his performance, and backup Malik Willis eventually took over. Love did throw an interception, but it didn’t hurt the Packers as they quickly regained possession through an interception of their own. He managed to guide Green Bay on several scoring drives before leaving the game, but once again, concerns about his health take center stage.
