There might be some unrest in the England dressing room as a report suggests that Andrew Flintoff won’t be part of the national team’s coaching staff for the white-ball series against Australia. The Telegraph reported that stand-in head coach Marcus Trescothick will have the opportunity to select his own backroom team. The decision was reportedly made because Flintoff didn’t “gel with” England’s white-ball captain, Jos Buttler, during the 2024 T20 World Cup. In contrast, Buttler has a strong bond with Trescothick, having played together at Somerset and worked on improving Buttler’s batting techniques in recent years.
Flintoff was involved with the England team during their 2023 tour of the West Indies and served as an assistant coach during the T20 World Cup. However, with his tenure ending, he is expected to move on to a new phase in his coaching career.
Flintoff also coached the Northern Superchargers in this year’s The Hundred, leading them to five wins and two losses. Although they narrowly missed the playoffs, it was a promising start to his coaching journey.
Meanwhile, Trescothick hasn’t ruled out the possibility of taking on the England head coach role full-time in the future.
“I’m definitely looking forward to the opportunity,” he said. “I’m really excited about the job. We’ll see where it goes from here. I hadn’t considered this role until now, and I’m not thinking beyond the Australia series at this point. My focus is on the task at hand,” he added.
