**Simone Biles Responds to NFL Player’s Criticism of Medal Ceremony Gesture**
- Simone Biles has faced criticism after taking a moment to show sportsmanship during a medal ceremony with teammate Jordan Chiles. Biles has defended her actions, highlighting her respect and support for other athletes. Former First Lady Michelle Obama praised the gesture as a “beautiful moment of sisterhood and sportsmanship.”
Despite Biles’ recent return to top form and her seven gold medals, she has been targeted by critics. Her husband, Jonathan Owens of the Chicago Bears, also faced backlash earlier for sharing a photo with one of her gold medals. Recently, Biles and Chiles received criticism from Baltimore Ravens cornerback Marlon Humphrey for their respectful bow to Brazilian gold medalist Rebeca Andrade. While many viewed the gesture as an expression of “class and humility,” Humphrey was quick to dismiss it.
On one hand, it makes sense why he might not want to bow to someone who just outperformed him on the podium. However, it’s not really up to him to make that call.
Andrade, much like Biles, is a significant figure in gymnastics. Her journey to becoming one of the top athletes in the world was extraordinary. Therefore, Biles is correct in saying that Andrade deserves recognition. Both Biles and Chiles are the ones who have earned the right to determine how they celebrate their achievements.
