Numerous athletes have always called the Dallas Mavericks home. Dallas consistently appears to be the destination where a large number of former players return.

Jason Kidd, J.J. Barea, Devin Harris, and Tyson Chandler were among the former players who came back to play for Dallas. Even though some of them were traded to the Mavs, they still hold a special place in their hearts for Dallas. Given his early influence on 2023–24 rookie Dereck Lively II, it is understandable why Chandler returned to assist and coach the Mavs.

One may make the same case for children. The former Mavs player returned to Dallas to assist with team coaching. Kidd was awarded with a multi-year extension by the team this past season for his outstanding work as head coach.

Spencer Dinwiddie is ideal for the Mavericks because of his increased defensive statistics.

One player who can join the ranks of Kidd, Chandler, and numerous others is Spencer Dinwiddie. Two seasons ago, the former Maverick was a key member of Dallas’ team that advanced to the Western Conference Finals.

With the goal of developing Dinwiddie into a useful backup guard, Dallas signed him to a one-year contract last week. He has the opportunity to lead the club from the bench and be the focal point of the second unit.

This time, however, is different because Dinwiddie has returned with a brand-new instrument. After his return to Dallas, his defence has improved.

Since he signed with the Lakers, he has been one of the team’s best defenders and players in terms of defensive rating. His defensive rating at the end of his Lakers career was 114.3. Even though it seems high, his defensive abilities have increased.

Dinwiddie’s rapid reflexes allowed him to lock up players with tremendous efficiency. Guarding some of the NBA’s hardest players, he always made sure to stay one step ahead of his opponent.

One instance is from the March 8 game against the Milwaukee Bucks; his defence of Damian Lillard sealed the victory. His lengthy arms allowed him to deflect the shot that would have won the game.

Also, Dinwiddie does a fantastic job of making things challenging for players who are taller than him. He has no problem using his body to keep scorers out or picking pockets with them. He had three or more blocks and/or steals in two games at the start of April.

When called upon, the Dallas guard has proven he is a formidable defender. He averaged a career-high 0.5 blocks per game while playing for the Lakers last season.

One more quality regarding Dinwiddie is his long-range shooting prowess. During his time with the Lakers, he made 38.9% of his attempted 3-pointers. The Mavs could find this useful, as they were in need of a 3-and-D player. If he can maintain his strong defensive play, he has the potential to develop into that player.

Without a doubt, the Mavericks enjoyed an incredible offseason. as they become more proficient on both ball sides. Among the players who may justify that is Dinwiddie.

All Dinwiddie has to do now is improve upon his Los Angeles performance in terms of scoring. This squad might be unbeatable if he can regain the offensive dominance he had while playing for Dallas in the past.
