The Dallas Mavericks were happy to acquire All-Star shooter Klay Thompson from the Golden State Warriors a few weeks ago, despite the fact that some believe he is already past his peak. However, general manager Nico Harrison said it was obvious that they should sign him.
The Mavericks acquired Thompson from the Warriors in an unprecedented six-team trade that also netted the franchise a 2025 second-round draft pick. In the same trade, they also let go of a second-round selection and Josh Green, a swingman in his fourth year.
Thompson joins Kyrie Irving and fellow Mavericks players Luka Doncic in this transaction, creating a potent Big Three in Dallas. With All-Star point guard Stephen Curry, Thompson is part of the Splash Brothers and has four championships to his name with the Warriors.
The 6’6″ and 220 pound Thompson is a perfect fit for the Mavericks, who were eliminated from the NBA Finals the previous season, because of his outstanding three-point shooting and perimeter defence. The team’s problems with three-point shooting from the Finals should be alleviated by Thompson’s career three-point percentage of 41.9% and his capacity to make catch-and-shoot opportunities.
Harrison continued to aggressively upgrade the roster while masterminding this big trade. Thompson was drawn to Dallas above other suitors by the opportunity to win numerous titles with Irving and Doncic. The Mavericks are now a strong favourite to win the NBA title the following season because to this transaction.

Despite what many considered to be his weakest season to date, Thompson produced enough for the Dubs in the 2023–24 campaign. The All-Star guard averaged 17.9 points, 38 percent shooting from outside the arc, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.3 assists during that 77-game stretch.
Although Thompson’s departure from the Dubs hurt, particularly for supporters of the Green Bay Packers, his upcoming Mavs debut will have fans lining up to see him later in the season. People will know by then whether Harrison made the correct choice in acquiring the shooter.
