Smith, an eight-time Pro Bowler, five-time All-Pro, and a starter since 2011, is currently a member of the New York Jets. In response to his departure, the Cowboys selected Tyler Guyton of Oklahoma with their first-round pick in April of last year. Like most first-round picks, Guyton enters the game as the clear favourite, especially in Dallas, considering the situation. In training camp, it’s his job to lose, and it will take a major setback or injury for the rookie to be fired.

Unfortunately, the team’s primary concern in 2024 won’t be left tackle. Conversely, Terence Steele needs to demonstrate that he has fully recovered from an ACL injury sustained in 2022 that limited him during the previous season. Furthermore, Steele has never excelled at pass protection, even at his best. That might get worse if Guyton is experiencing problems.

Dallas’ depth at the position of the starting overters is another factor. Tyron Smith’s departure may have the benefit of relieving some of their burden. Given Smith’s well-documented incapacity to play a full season since 2016, perhaps our backups will finally get a rest.

However, Steele already has a track record, while Guyton’s potential as a professional is unknown. It makes sense to be concerned that Chuma Edoga, Asim Richards, Nathan Thomas, or whoever else makes the roster will have to play a large number of snaps at either tackle position if one of them loses time. These men are all thought to be stronger guard prospects for the NFL than tackle possibilities.
