Vernon Bland, the long-time head coach of Prairie View A&M’s softball team, has taken on a new role as assistant coach for the Texas Smoke in the Women’s Fastpitch League, the nation’s sole professional softball competition. This league, inaugurated just last year, currently features only four teams, including the reigning champions, Texas Smoke, who kicked off their season on June 20 aiming to defend their title.
The Texas Smoke, founded by former Cincinnati Reds baseball player Brandon Phillips and his wife, professional wrestler Jade Cargill, chose Austin as their home base due to its vibrant growth and status as the capital of Texas. Phillips expressed a desire to provide more opportunities for women in softball beyond college, a sentiment central to their team’s mission.
Coach Bland’s legacy at Prairie View A&M is storied, marked by his 13-year tenure leading the Lady Panthers to numerous accolades. He holds the record for most wins in the program’s history with an impressive 242 victories, a testament to his leadership and the caliber of teams he has built. Bland boasts three SWAC Championships and has been honored three times as SWAC Coach of the Year. Under his guidance, Prairie View A&M’s softball squads have made three appearances in the NCAA Regionals, further cementing his impact on the sport.
Inducted into the Prairie View A&M Sports Hall of Fame, Bland has recently achieved exceptional seasons with records like a remarkable 23-1 in the SWAC and 29-19 overall. His coaching prowess extends beyond wins and losses, shaping countless players who have earned recognition in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.
Coach Bland’s transition to the Texas Smoke marks a new chapter in his illustrious career, bringing his expertise to the professional arena while continuing to inspire and mentor athletes in pursuit of excellence on and off the field. His dedication and achievements underscore his commitment to advancing softball and providing opportunities for athletes to shine at every level of competition.
