Woodlands, Texas — Ten years later, at the 2014 ANA Inspiration (now Chevron Championship), Lexi Thompson went 78-74 and missed the two-over cutline by six shots in her only major triumph at the age of 19. Thompson has missed six major league cuts in her last seven starts. She has averaged 74.4 over that period, with 14 consecutive rounds finishing in the 70s. After the play on Friday, Thompson said nothing.
Thompson’s play at Carlton Woods is still very much in decline from his major-league form of the previous 10 years. She placed in the top five in majors four times between 2013 and 2022, including four times as runner-up.
The 29-year-old’s missed chances to capture a second major championship rank among his greatest accomplishments, though. Thompson was told she would be fined four strokes for not replacing her ball correctly during the third round after a spectator at the 2017 ANA emailed the LPGA. Later, she fell short against So Yeon Ryu in a playoff match.
Thompson lost a five-shot lead in the last nine holes of the 2021 U.S. Women’s Open and finished third. She lost a two-shot lead with three holes left in the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship at the Congressional Blue Course the following year, but still managed to finish in second place.
Since Congressional, Thompson has only made one noteworthy cut, at the Women’s PGA last year. Thompson made it to the weekend by finishing her second round with four birdies. She finished T-47.
Thompson struggled throughout the whole of the previous season until the conclusion. She finished in the top 10 in her final three starts of the season (a T-8 at the NW Arkansas Championship, a sixth at the Ascendant LPGA, and a T-7 at The Annika) and enhanced her status for 2024 by going 3-1-0 at the Solheim in September. This season, the eleven-time LPGA champion has been playing well; three weeks ago, he placed among the top three at the Ford Championship.
