GREEN BAY, Wisconsin: Chris Hampton, the safeties coach and co-defensive coordinator for Oregon, has over 15 years of coaching experience. Evan Williams, a 2024 NFL Draft fourth-round selection selected by the Green Bay Packers, was his teammate for just one season.

One season in particular made a lasting effect. Hampton noted that the Packers selected a player and somebody that is “unbelievable.”

“Unique,” Hampton remarked to Packer Central. “He’s the best player I’ve ever coached, hands down.”

Williams attended Fresno State for his first four years of college. In 2023, he transferred to Oregon with the intention of strengthening his draft stock. Hampton’s first season in Eugene began that year.

“He understands it. He actually does, according to Hampton. “He adores the game.” He is going to put in a ton of work. He’s going to love working out. He’ll be at the facilities all the time. He has an Ivy League vibe to him. He’s really intelligent, though I don’t think he enjoys it when people realize that. like really intelligent; very, very smart.

“He doesn’t have any problems or shortcomings in his character away from the field. He is a man of great character. He’s an absolute pleasure to coach and a talented football player. A silent leader. Hard. I just can’t express how tough he is or how much he enjoys playing the game and competing. He is very critical of himself. He holds himself to a very high standard.

Williams was a three-year member of the Fresno State all-Mountain West team and made the second team of the Pac-12 in 2023. Throughout their season together, where did he grow?

Hampton stated, “I believe he improved as a tackler in his one year.” “I believe he rapidly adjusted and grew in our program as far as he entered. He was incredibly versatile. After just a few weeks, he already exuded confidence and leadership, leading by example, much like an experienced member of the program. He took the lead in all conditioning and off-season drills. He seemed like a pro to me. His entire demeanor exuded professionalism.

“He had that while he was here, but I’m not sure if he had it at Fresno. He had no management at all. He was highly productive and low maintenance.

Williams’ five seasons were marked by a great deal of variety. He had nine passes defensed and three interceptions at Fresno State in 2021. He only had one pass defensed in 2023, but out of 82 tackles, he recorded 4.5 sacks and five tackles for losses.

He’s a fantastic blitzer, according to Hampton.

2023 saw a decline in ball output under coverage, but PFF still assessed him with a 73.0 percent catch rate and 8.1 yards per reception.
