Green Bay, Wisconsin – Chris Hampton has been the safeties coach and co-defensive coordinator for Oregon for almost 15 years. The Green Bay Packers selected Evan Williams in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL Draft, and he played with him for just one season.

An enduring impression was made by that one season. Hampton called the player and individual the Packers selected “unbelievable.”

Hampton called Packer Central “one of a kind.” “He is by far my best player that I have ever coached.”

Fresno State was where Williams played his first four years of college. He moved to Oregon in 2023 with the intention of increasing his draft stock. Hampton spent his first season in Eugene there.

“He understands it.” He does, really does,” stated Hampton. He adores the game. He will put in a ton of labor. He will become an avid gym goer. He will be at the facility constantly. Ivy League person, that’s how he is. He’s incredibly smart, however I don’t think he enjoys it when people find it out. As in extremely intelligent; exceedingly clever.

“Off the field, he doesn’t have any problems or shortcomings in his character. He is a man of great integrity. He’s a terrific football player and a pleasure to coach. a composed boss. Harsh. I can’t express enough how tough he is or how much he enjoys competing and the game. He is quite harsh on himself. He holds himself in extremely high regard.

Having excelled in the Mountain West for three years at Fresno State, Williams was named to the Pac-12 second team in 2023. In their shared season, where did he grow?

“I believe he improved as a tackler in his one year,” Hampton stated. Insofar as he entered our plan, I believe he developed and adjusted fast. His adaptability was pretty good. After only a few weeks, he already exuded confidence and leadership, acting as if he was a seasoned participant in the program. In every conditioning and off-season drill, he took the lead. He seemed to me to be an expert. He had a professional mindset in every way.

“It’s unclear if he had that in Fresno, but it was unquestionably present throughout his time here. He lacked management. He performed well and required little upkeep.

Throughout his five seasons, Williams displayed a great deal of adaptability. He has three interceptions and nine passes defensed while attending Fresno State in 2021. Among 82 tackles in 2023, he had five tackles for losses, 4.5 sacks, and just one pass defensed.

Hampton described him as an amazing blitzer.

In 2023, PFF tagged him with a 73.0 percent catch rate but only 8.1 yards per reception, despite the fact that there wasn’t any ball creation in coverage.
