LOS ANGELES The Dodgers spectacularly missed their 2023 title attempt. They never led during the National League Division Series, in addition to not winning a single game. After Arizona swept the Diamondbacks in three games, the team was up at the end of 25 of the series’ 27 innings.
“At Dodger Stadium on Tuesday, Dodgers President of Baseball Operations Andrew Friedman stated, ‘Our aim was to win 11 games in October and we didn’t win one. Therefore, we must determine what we can accomplish and how to do it differently.
The people assigned to make those adjustments for the upcoming season will mostly be the same as for the current one. It should come as no surprise that manager Dave Roberts is staying put, but strangely, he is one of the few supporters whose taste in blood goes well with Halloween.
Roberts signed a three-year contract extension in March 2022, with two seasons remaining. In 2023, he earned $3.25 million, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today.
The Dodgers have won 211 regular-season games under Roberts’ leadership since he inked that agreement, including 111 in 2022—the most in the National League in almost a century. However, they lost all of their games this season against the 84-win Diamondbacks and only one game against the 89-win Padres in 2022. They were ousted in the Division Series in both seasons.
In both seasons, Friedman referred to it as an organizational failure because winning a championship is the ultimate objective. He isn’t, however, blaming anyone for it.
Dodgers require starting pitching; player turnover is expected.
“When an organization fails, it’s a collective responsibility that involves all of us.” We would make adjustments if this were just one individual or a small group of people, Friedman added. “We simply wouldn’t pretend to have changed or hidden what had occurred. Instead, we have a large number of deeply frustrated and irate individuals who will collaborate very hard to make sure they are not in this situation next year.
“It seems like changing things would be more symbolic than a means of attracting better and more skilled individuals.”
Roberts’ coaching staff is also coming back, and no changes are anticipated there either.
The culture and group’s combined efforts, Friedman said, “went through the clubhouse and watched how everyone is focused—all of our players on how to try to win a game— not just, ‘Hey, everyone gets along.'” “As we postmortem, I can state with total certainty that it was not due to a lack of effort, even though there aren’t many things I can do that about. observing how these guys cared for themselves, got ready, and made every effort to position themselves for success.
Since we didn’t do it in the end, that’s what counts the most, so the answer can be found there. However, I believe Doc and our coaching staff performed admirably this season, and none of us performed well in any of the three games versus Arizona.
Gomes remaining in place
Since sacking chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom in mid-September, the Red Sox have struggled to find a replacement for Bloom due to the entrenched position of very influential manager Alex Cora and ownership that hasn’t made high-end purchases in recent years.
According to Chad Jennings and Fabian Ardaya at The Athletic on Monday, Brandon Gomes, the Dodgers general manager for the past two years and a seven-season member of the team, declined to interview for the open Red Sox position. Gomes stated that he would rather remain with the team that acquired Mookie Betts than the one that traded him.
Gomes gave an explanation of his choice on Tuesday.
Gomes remarked, “I’m very flattered and grateful for the interest.” However, my family and I adore this place. I’m focused on taking home a title and have a strong enthusiasm for this organization.
