Patrick Mahomes explains his desire to join the Green Bay Packers instead of the Kansas City Chiefs.
The quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs, Patrick Mahomes, has expressed his love and respect for the people of the city amidst rumors that the team may consider relocating from Missouri to Kansas. Although the Chiefs have played at Arrowhead Stadium since 1972, their contract is set to end in 2030. Despite major renovations from 2007 to 2010, the squad is ready for even more improvements.
But funding for these renovations—which are projected to cost $800 million—has become a contentious issue.
The Chiefs have had a meteoric spike in popularity since choosing Mahomes in the 2017 NFL Draft. In the seven years prior, the team has won three Super Bowl titles and drawn sellout crowds. In order to remain competitive with other stadiums, the Chiefs are eager to update their amenities.
Since voters in Jackson County, where Arrowhead is located, recently rejected a sales tax proposal that would have partially funded the enhancements, the club is now exploring other options beyond 2030. Despite Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt’s statement that a move to Kansas would be an option, Mahomes has made it clear that he believes the fans should come first. His deep emotional connection to Arrowhead Stadium and his fondness for the people of Kansas City suggest that he may not be in favor of the planned relocation.
