Devin Singletary “isn’t a lock” to return for the upcoming season since the Houston Texans may choose to sign two-time Pro Bowl running back Saquon Barkley, according to Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston.
Wilson thinks that the 26-year-old running back “should have a healthy market” in unrestricted free agency.
In Singletary’s one-year, $2.75 million contract with the Texans during the previous regular season, he ran for 898 yards and four touchdowns.
Barkley “targeted” the Texans “as his top potential destination” in free agency, according to a previous report from Wilson. During the previous season, he ran for 6 touchdowns and 962 yards with the New York Giants.
Barkley subsequently stated that the consequences of the ankle injury he sustained in Week 2 affected him all season long.
Despite starting behind Dameon Pierce as running back in his debut season with the Texans, Singletary gained more playing time in the early going and was given a starter position by Week 8.
Wilson claims that Singletary has expressed a desire to remain in Houston and is probably a far more affordable alternative than Barkley. Barkley’s estimated $9.9 million AAV is over half of what Spotrac estimates for his next contract, which is $5.3 million annually.
However, after finishing the previous season ranked 23rd in rushing touchdowns and 22nd in rushing yards among all NFL teams, the Texans are seeking change.
Wilson has hinted that the Texans may be looking to make additional changes to that lineup, even though Pierce, J.J. Taylor, and Gerrid Doaks are still under contract for the upcoming campaign.
Wilson reported on February 29 that the team is “expected to explore additional running back options and there are scenarios where they sign more than one running back.”
Wilson said on Sunday that D’Andre Swift, a 2023 Pro Bowl player for the Philadelphia Eagles, and Tony Pollard, who finished the previous season with the Dallas Cowboys with a quadruple-digit total of rushing yards, could be among those alternatives.
Barkley has the highest potential upside of any of those selections; in 2022, he amassed 1,312 running yards and 10 touchdowns. To assist 2023 Offensive Rookie of the Year C.J. Stroud become an even bigger threat next fall, the Texans may need the former Giants star.
